British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
