Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
